Iliesa Delana praised the western schools during the victory celebration at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.

The Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports applauded the achievement of Natabua High School and Jasper Williams High School in winning the boys’ and girls’ categories during the 2015 Coca Cola Games in Suva last month.

The celebration started with a march through the Lautoka City.

He said the event was a significant one for the Lautoka community and the Western Division.

“Today is a day Lautoka City, teachers, family and friends, fans and supporters come together to celebrate victory,” Delana said.

“The western division is known for producing great rugby and football players.

“The athletic achievement proved that we can produce more good sportspeople in other sports.”

Delana said it was teamwork that produced the results.

“This is the outcome of careful planning, preparations and sacrifice. Performing their best at the secondary school competition despite the lack of facilities and exposure is indeed a display of courage and determination.”

Delana also wished the best of luck to those who will be participating in the Pacific Games in Port Moresby in July .

“This Government is committed to youth and sports development and we will continue to play our part. This Government has always placed a significant emphasis on the growth of our nation whether it is from an economic, social, health or political perspective.

“Sports development is one of the key platforms that is considered pivotal in our efforts to lay a solid foundation for our young people.”

He said the sporting facilities will be built in two  locations in Fiji as part of Governments commitment towards sports.

Delana advised the athletes to maintain discipline and for teachers to ensure that students were nurtured well.

The Lautoka City Council was grateful for the support.

LCC chief executive officer  Jone Nakauvadra said the two schools made Lautoka proud.

“You have brought name and fame to the city of Lautoka and its people and we salute you. We are grateful for your performance,” he said.

Also present at the celebration were Minister for Women and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya and the Tui Vuda Ratu Eparama Kitione Tavaiqia.
