Girmit Day should be remembered with respect for our forefathers who looked to the future with hope.

Those were the comforting words of India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Gitesh Sarma, who officiated during the Girmit Diwas celebration at the University of Fiji in Saweni, Lautoka, last Friday.

Mr Sarma said: “We are talking about something important in history, it is very true that the country we built is something relevant to people with a huge picture.”

He said the Girmit participated in the building of this country and they have always focused on the Girmit life right up till now.

“We can learn history and we can be inspired by history but we cannot be master of the past; what is gone has already happened but what is important for you is that you can be a participant in the making of history.”

He said India was shaped and modernised with high technologies, information technologies, bio- technologies, pharmaceuticals, entertainment industry and Bollywood.

“The lesson is really derived from you. There is no limit, the sky is the limit you can exceed everything and you can excel in everything that was done before you have to be the best and nothing less you have reached the highest level,” he said. Mr Sarma said during the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden visit to Fiji last November, he had praised Fiji as a country.
