Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou has committed himself to improving the country’s anti-piracy efforts and strengthening of the Copyright Act.

In his keynote address at the 2015 FPRA Music Awards at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Saturday night, Mr Tuitubou reassured the former Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Pio Tikoduadua, who had been pushing to reduce copyright infringement; that he would diligently continue the work Mr Tikoduadua had begun.

“I wish to reassure the former Minister for Infrastructure and Transport that I will commit myself to the work that he has carried forth with the Fiji Performing Rights Association in protecting the intellectual property of our musicians and composers,” he said.

“I would also like to thank him for his commitment and dedication to the work of strengthening copyright in all performing arts.”

Mr Tuitubou also reiterated that Government would continue to work with stakeholders to ensure that the negative effects of piracy would be reduced.

“Government has worked closely with the FPRA to enforce the copyright laws on local compositions and end the reign of piracy.

“It hasn’t always been easy and we still have some ways to go but we share a determination to stamp out the intellectual theft that has deprived local composers of the money they deserve and will never stop in ensuring that they are given their just rewards,” Mr Tuitubou said.

FPRA chairman Eremasi Tamanisau praised Mr Tuitubou for taking up the role of protecting the intellectual properties of musicians and composers in the country.

“We are very fortunate that the Minister for Youth and Sports has accepted this mammoth responsibility in ensuring the protection of the intellectual properties of our musicians and composers,” Mr Tamanisau said.
