Lautoka Win Ma’unatul Islam IDC
The Zibraaz Sahib-captained- Islands Electric Wholesalers (IEW) Lautoka side beat Sarava (Ba) 1-0 to scoop the Late AR Manu Trophy last Sunday.
A second half surge by striker Mohammed Tasleem was enough to seal the victory for the visitors.
Tasleem, a current Nadroga rep during the Rewa Galaxy National Premier League, was left unmarked inside the Sarava box to easily tap in the ball in an epic finale.
Other players in the side included Ba striker Abbu Zaheed and Lautoka defender Zibraaz Sahib, who played an instrumental role in the win.
In the semi-finals Lautoka defeated Australia 3-0 while Sarava edged out Meigunya (Nadi) 1-0. Ma’unatul Islam Sports Association general secretary Abdul Kadar said the two-day tournament involved 10 teams and was a success.
“The association was established 25 years ago with a vision to bring other associations together to compete in sports. The tournament attracted eight local teams and two overseas teams from Australia and New Zealand,” he said.
“The aim for the tournament is to bring together the Ma’unatul Islam community through participation in sports.
“The tournament has been revived after a lapse of four years with the last meet being held in 2010. We now want to have the tournament played regularly. We are yet to decide the venue for next year’s tourney,” Kadar said.
He said there are also talks to host a North/West tournament later in the year as they compete for the Late SM Koya Trophy.
