The dismal, fifth place finish of the Vodafone Fijian Under-20 rugby team at the recent 2015 World Rugby Under-20 Trophy has indicated a serious development problem.

Vodafone Flying Fijians head coach John McKee believes this problem lies with proper investment in our young talents and made this point when speaking to SUNsports yesterday.

In response to what can only be described as a disastrous outing that has resulted in the junior Fijians falling even further on the global ranking ladder, McKee pinpointed key areas needing attention.

“International competition at this level is getting stronger and stronger. Looking at the Junior World Trophy from afar, the teams with the best programmes such as academy investment, time and coaching, got to the final.

“Talent is important and Fiji is not short on that but so is the programme. We need to invest more effort in our Academy Programme and our elite player pathway to keep our best young players in Fiji longer.

“The drain on young players to overseas clubs is also a factor on our competitiveness at this level.”

Fiji won their first game at the Tier Two competition beating host Portugal 34-19. They succumbed to Georgia 13-30 in their second game and were narrowly pipped by Uruguay 28-26 before regaining composure to beat Namibia 36-24 and finish in fifth place overall.

Georgia went on to win the Under-20 Trophy competition after defeating Canada 49-24 in the Cup final.
