The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations is pleased with the decline in child labour cases since 2011.

Minister Jioji Konrote said the decrease in child labour activities became noticeable after the introduction of free education and other initiatives by the Bainimarama Government.

He said the ministry received a report of 64 cases of alleged child labour in 2011 and 2012, 41 cases in 2013, and down to only four reported cases in 2014.

“The ministry is working closely with district inter-agency partners including the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, relevant non-governmental organisations and community leaders to fight child labour and bring it to zero,” Mr Konrote said.

“We are concerned about child labour and children must be in school and not working. We have sent 180 children back to school. They were underaged children taken away from work sites.

“I urge employers not to employ any child who is under age; the ministry will come for you and take back the child to school. If you break the law you will be taken to task,” he said.
