Speaker to Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni said that one of her main roles was to ensure discipline in the House.

While speaking to staff and students of Latter-day Saints College (LDS) in Tamavua during her ‘Meet the Speaker programme, Dr Luveni said she acted as a referee in Parliament.

“I have been told numerous times that I should be more imperative when maintaining discipline in the House, especially with the Opposition, but I usually say that they (Opposition) are playing their roles in opposing Government,” Dr Luveni said.

“In my role, I must maintain impartiality at all times. That means, I must not take sides at all times when doing my job. My role is not to agree or disagree with what is being said, but to make sure that the Parliament is working properly and that all the MPs are following the rules.”

The Speaker and staff of the Civic Education Division under the Department of Legislature in Parliament under the programme will be visiting places in trying to educate the public on the functions of Parliament.

Dr Luveni spoke on her role in Parliament, role of the Government and the Opposition side, Parliament protocols and functions and most importantly the importance of the Parliament House.

She encouraged students to work on their weaknesses and become the best in whatever work they are committed to do.
