Swami Vivekananda College proudly presented the respected medals to the school’s swimming team yesterday.

The individual presentation of medals and prizes was done by the parents who were present at the celebration.

The squad of 23 students achieved a total of 23 gold, 15 silver and four bronze medals at this year’s Fiji National Schools Swimming Championship, which was held in Suva later last month.

The girls successfully defended their title winning 19 gold, 10 silver and three bronze medals. The boys finished in second spot with 18 gold, five silver and one bronze medals.

The boy’s squad was beaten in the top spot and finished second.

Coach Marlene Vuniwaqa Blake, who is also a parent, was impressed with his swimmers.

“It was a good team and we placed the best together so they came out in top honours within their different age groups,” she said.

“The kids have been doing so well with the swimming and every year the results itself and more kids are participating in it.”

School Principal Dhirendra Kumar says the school has been taking part for a few years and has been doing well.

“We are very glad as this is a big achievement for the school so we thank the students and the coaches,” he said.

“Some of the parents were also sponsors for this event so it shows their commitment to the school.”

The students had to train at the Airport Fiji Limited swimming pool in Namaka since the school do not have a swimming pool.

Kumar says that land in the school compound was available and a pool can be built provided there is special funding available for it. The school received the support from the management of Rama Krishna Mission an external support from Pacific Destinations and Aqua Pacific.
