The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, says sports tourism builds visitor arrivals into the country.

He made the comment during the official opening of the World Surf League Tour 2015 Fiji Pro on Tavarua Island yesterday.

“We’ve a little focus at the moment trying to encourage more sports tourism,”Koya said.

“We have the Fiji International golf event, the world surfing happening so there is an increase in the sports tourism especially water-based activity.

“This is wonderful day for Fiji and I think the fact that we have this on a yearly basis is just absolutely phenomenal.

“In terms of surfing they consider this as the best place on earth.

“All thanks to WPS for choosing Fiji again because when they do get asked, they prefer the destination Fiji in Tavarua.

“This goes out to about eight million viewers around the world so that’s a huge marketing exercise for Fiji as a destination.

“Some of them have followers, I understand from the Brazilian surfers they have two million surfers, Kelly Slater alone has over a million followers.”

He says this goes in line with the policies the Government has in place in trying to increase the tourism in Fiji at all times.

He hopes by next year this would get even better of what Fiji does and numbers can increase.
