The Vatudamu and Naqere communities in Savusavu celebrated their community day in a big way last Friday.

Community leader John Lanyon said it’s the first time they had organised such an event to urge the community to utilise their land and for the women to fully utilise their handicraft skills.

“The whole idea behind the initiative was to mobilise the community members to utilise their skills,” Mr Lanyon said.

“We wanted our women to do something rather than just sitting at home doing nothing.

“Both the men and women also participated in the yam competition,” he said.

Mr Lanyon said in the future they hoped to lure in other good planters or farmers to be part of the event.

The more than 100 people that live in the Vatudamu and Naqere communities also celebrated the event with a big feast.

And special guest for the event was the Roko Tui Cakaudrove, Sara Bulutani.

He said for the future they had plans to also include a fishing competition where the winners would get prizes and it would be a bigger and better event.

The male and female overall winners were Romulus Lanyon who planted Filipai and uvi dina (two species of yam) and 70-year-old Vunaki Lanyon who planted uvi dina.

Ms Lanyon was the only female participant at the competition in that category which she won.
