After months of planning the proposed Nadi Sports Council will hold their inaugural annual general meeting on June 16.

Co-chairman Usman Ali confirmed the Minister for Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou, will be chief guest at the Nadi Town Council Chambers.

“We need representatives from all sporting bodies, government and individuals are all invited to attend so that we can move ahead,” Ali said.

“It is also important for Government of the day to be part of the initiative as Nadi is the centre of all sports to link with other sports either major or minor.

“This is beginning and it will attract quality sports in the greater Nadi area. This will also work as a collective voice and we wish it will grow from strength to strength.”

Former Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Commiitee (FASANOC) president Reg Sanday earlier said there was a seriousness and urgency in forming the proposed Nadi Sports Council.

He said the Nadi Sports Council was an innovative concept that needs to be rolled out soon.

“The population shifts in recent years towards Nadi plus the application of sports science in young athletes are showing that the centre of gravity for Fiji sports has shifted towards the west.”

He said this process needed to be nurtured so that maximum gains can be gained by society.

Nadi Chamber and Industries president, Dr Ram Raju, shared similar sentiments.

“This is an avenue to give opportunity for young and old to maintain good health through sports. Our office in getting matters organised with the agenda and it’s now important to touch base with all the sporting bodies in Nadi,” Dr Raju said.

Ali confirmed the Millennium Group of Companies’ office in Martintar, Nadi will be the home of the NSC.
