Miliana Vivita and Vasenai Tamani travelled from island in the Lomaiviti Group to take advantage of the free medical check-up underway at the Savusavu Hospital in Vanua Levu.

The check-up is an initiative under the Pacific partnership (PP15) programme which is a multilateral mission based on common goals between the United States of America (USA) and partner nations.

The US Navy medical team aboard the USS Mercy and Savusavu medical staff conducted surgical screenings at the hospital on Thursday and yesterday.

Ms Vivita said she travelled from Koro Island on Tuesday to get her eyes checked.

“I came for registration on Wednesday and they gave me a card to come back today (Thursday) for the surgical screening,” the 69-year-old said.

“Since last year, both my eyes were getting weak and I could hardly see anything. I am thankful that I can get my eyes checked by eye specialists from America.”

Ms Tamani, on the other hand, said she had registered for the dental check-up.

“I came all the way from Koro Island to get a dental check-up and if my teeth could be pulled out by this team because they have state-of-the-art technology,” she said.

“The dental clinic will open next week at Ganilau Park and that’s where they will conduct their checks.”

The pair will return home after their medical treatments.
