The Tui Nadi, Ratu Sailosi Dawai, has called on the stakeholders to resolve the course of action on the Nadi River urgently.

He referred to the two proposed options of controlling the Nadi River flood which included either:

  • Widening of the river (dredging the river); OR
  • The diversion of the river (creating a new river or channel.)

The Tui Nadi said, “This is very serious for Nadi; when there is flooding a lot of people, the villages and businesshouses suffer.”

“This has been an ongoing issue which requires priority because Nadi Town and Narewa are on low-lying areas so when it rains heavily then the river quickly rises and floods the area.”

Ratu Sailosi said there had also been a lot of rubbish dumped into the river.

“We had the Climate Change Workshop last year but there hasn’t been any project taking place. Our river is affected from landslides; and we cannot catch fish or Kai from the river compared to previous years,” Ratu Sailosi said.

Nadi Town special administrator Robin Ali said a lot of people were interested in the consultation on Wednesday night.

“Majority prefer river improvement with widening but there are a lot of factors that need to be taken on board so a lot of serious consultation is needed.”

Ministry of Agriculture acting permanent secretary Uraia Waibuta, said they would meet with the stakeholders again in Suva next week.

“We are just facilitating the process of the technical work committee before a submission of recommendation is presented to Cabinet for approval,” Mr Waibuta said.

“The final decision will be Government’s but we want to assist Cabinet with a submission from the people.”
