A four-bedroom house was destroyed in a fire at Valemasima at Votualevu, Nadi, at midday yesterday.

At the time of the fire, nobody was in the house and it is believed the blaze started from the back of the house.

Home owner Sushila Wati, 59, was in tears as she watched the fire destroy the sacrifice she had made through the 16 years of living there.

She lived with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson in that house made of concrete, corrugated iron and timber.

“I cannot believe it as I don’t even know how the fire started. Nothing was saved and now we have nowhere to go with no money,” Ms Wati said.

“My children renovated the house recently after collecting money for over some time and all is gone.”

Ms Wati was outside the house with her grandson in the front yard sweeping as neighbours, who saw thick black smoke, started calling her.

“By the time I actually heard them the flames had taken over and I did not know what to do,” she said.

“My son had left the house just some time before the fire took its toll.”

Ms Wati’s son, Mohit Prasad was too shocked to find his years of hard work and sacrifice go up in flames.

“I just renovated my house last month and now it’s all gone. Everything has been destroyed,” he said. The cost of the damage and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
