A military officer has been handed a three- month imprisonment sentence by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday for accepting an advantage.

The Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption charged Jone Senibici, who was found guilty of two counts of accepting an advantage.

FICAC proved beyond reasonable doubt that Senibici on June 28, 2013, had accepted a Babu silver and gold-plated watch and cash of $100 from one Yong Pan.

Senibici was on secondment to the Department of Immigration as a bond officer and was being paid by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

He helped one Yong Pan with his application and accepted the watch and money offered by him as a gratitude knowing that he had no permission to accept them.

Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne, while delivering the sentence, said as he was on secondment, Senibici breached the trust placed in him by the Government who put him in the Immigration Department expecting for him to use his expertise as a military officer with an experience of 28 years.

The magistrate said by engaging in this activity, the accused also brought disrepute to the mother institution (RFMF).

In mitigation the court considered that he was married with two children, is a first offender and was remorseful of his action.

“However bribery related offences by public servants need to be dealt harshly with custodial sentences to deter future offences,” Magistrate Somaratne said.

He was given three months imprisonment for the two counts to be served concurrently. He has 28 days to appeal his sentence.
