President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said finding pragmatic and sustainable solutions to STIs and HIV/AIDS is one of his main concerns now.

He made these comments while opening the symposium for the Oceania Society for Sexual Health and HIV Medicine at Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva yesterday.

“In this day and age when we have medication that can prevent mother to child or vertical transmission, we should not have any such cases at all,”he said.

Ratu Epeli added that every year globally around 1.4 million women living with HIV became pregnant.

“I have and will continue to promote a more practical solution to STIs and HIV – and that is to advise all but particularly those in the 14 to 29 and the 30 to 39 age youth groups – the most sexually active, the bulk of the education and working population and the most vulnerable, on the need to use protection such as condoms.  The motto is to “get it on before you get it on.”
