Laisenia Tuitubou has labelled this year as the year for sports in Fiji.

This is after the Vodafone Fijian U23 team qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil after defeating Vanuatu 4-3 in the Olympic qualifier in Port Moresby on Sunday.

The Minister for Youth and Sports congratulated the players and said Fiji has the potential to achieve more.

“Well done to the players and officials,”he said.

“First the Vodafone Fijian 7s team qualified for Rio and winning the World Sevens Series title and then the Vodafone Fijian U20 taking part in the FIFA U20 World Cup for the first time and now our U23 making us proud again.

“This is a great year for sports in Fiji.

“This shows that we have the potential to qualify and compete on the world stage and in order to do that, we need the proper assistance.

“This is why we have spent a lot of time and money in setting up proper facilities and bringing overseas coaches.

“I must congratulate Carlos Buzzetti on a job well done and for creating history for Fiji and for bringing  pride back to Fiji in soccer.”

With Fiji’s place confirmed for the Rio Olympics, financial assistance will be the key factor.

“The Government will definitely assist as long as the Fiji FA come up with a plan on what they need,”he said.
