More than 200 people gathered at the Katonivere grounds in Labasa yesterday to commemorate the Mid- Year International Day for People with Disability.

Chief guest and Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said as the old and young came together in appreciation of their different daily struggles, stories were shared and friendships were made.

“It is a time where people with disability converge to share their experiences, their achievements, struggles and issues that surround them,” he said.

Mr Vocea said while there was enough awareness in Labasa community the disabled people in rural and remote areas are left out in the services that we access. He said that Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Iliesa Delana should be a good example of how people with disability can still achieve anything.

Inclusive involvement for disabled

The celebration was also aimed at special and inclusive involvement for disabled people in the North.

This was highlighted by executive director for the Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons, Dr Sitiveni Yanuyanutawa yesterday in Labasa.

He said the event was important to people with disabilities and the Government had implemented the inclusiveness policy in 2013.

“We will try to cover the eight-year programme that has been mapped out to allow persons with disability to access quality education.”
