A school in the North has come into the limelight for the mistreatment of a disabled student who had to find a school in the Lau Group after she could not stand the treatment she received at her old school.

Speaking at the mid-year disability celebrations in Labasa yesterday Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea shared information on the incident in a North school where a student living with disability was mistreated.

Mr Vocea said that this was a very sad incident that needed to be addressed.

“I am aware of a school which I attended when I was young wherein a young girl was mistreated. The student had to sadly find another school in Lau where she was well received and is getting the treatment that she deserves,” he said.

Mr Vocea said that the incident was a big lesson to education officers and members of the public regarding the treatment of people living with disabilities.

“There is a dire need for people in our communities to be taught about how to live and cope with people living with disabilities,” he said. “It is good to know the mistreatment of people with disabilities is slowly diminishing from our communities.”
