The Fijian Elections Office yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).

The MOU was signed during the end of the two-day democracy assessment workshop at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi.

International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute hosted the workshop to help on democracy assessments, measurements and data validation among Melanesian countries.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said the MOU would help capacity development opportunities and exchange of information.

“This partnership will allow the office to bring opportunities from overseas into Fiji and the region to enhance the electoral services that the office is mandated to offer,” Mr Saneem said.

“It allows opportunities for office staff to participate in knowledge exchange programmes like international forums and events and writing and publishing research papers on electoral matters.

“Through these partnerships, the office will be able to establish itself in the region and the international arena.”

Among the benefits from the MOU would the set-up of Fijian Elections Office’ electoral library.

“The office has now prepared a five-year strategic plan. In accordance with this plan, the office will extend its network and enter into partnerships with reputable international and regional organisations.”

International IDEA has established itself as a leader in electoral and democracy research in the world for the past 20 years.

“We look forward to the development of the Fijian Election framework over the years to come,” International IDEA interim regional director Asia-Pacific Andrew Ellis said.
