Labasa was on fire in their first match of the INKK Mobile Battle of the Giants (B.O.G) tournament winning 2-0 against Nadroga at the Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori yesterday.

The Lions made their intentions clear on how serious they are in winning the second major tournament after scooping the Vodafone Fijian FACT early this year.

The 10-men Labasa side held on to win after Labasa captain Taniela Waqa was red-carded in the 87th minute for his second bookable offence.

Waqa will miss the second match against  Rewa today.

 

What happened: Taione Kerevanua and Christopher Wasasala scored for Labasa in a perfect start to the tournament.

The match started off with both sides taking a cautious approach.

The match gained intensity as it went further into the first-half and Labasa got their lucky break.

Kerevanua scored from a penalty in the 47th minute.

 

Halftime: Labasa 1-0 Nadroga

The second-half belonged to Labasa as they controlled the play and kept Nadroga under pressure.

In the 75th minute, Vodafone Fijian Under-23 rep Wasasala sealedthe win with a perfect header.

Star turn: Wasasala was the star for Labasa.

Comments: Labasa president Rayaz Khan;

“We want to win this tournament as it’s been long overdue.

“We have won this tournament once and we desperately want to win this tournament for our home fans,” Khan said.

“We have won the Vodafone Fijian FACT and now we are targeting the B.O.G.

“We want to win all the tournaments in the country.

Khan said they will miss the services of their captain Waqa for the next match against Rewa.

“We will miss Waqa against Rewa, but we are prepared for this match,”Khan added.

Nadroga coach Ramesh Sharma said Labasa was a better side.

“We faced a lot of difficulties for this tournament because of financial constrain.

“We will do our best to win our second match against Ba to stay in contention for the semifinal.
