A fire last Friday night has left a farmer in Nagigi homeless.

Jagdishwar Prasad, 57, was away in Suva when his house was razed to the ground.

“I do not know who might have started the fire as I live away from the rest of the community,” Mr Prasad said.

The Nagigi farmer said he was really disappointed to return home only to see his house burned to the ground.

“My car was also burned in the fire and being single it was really hard to return from Suva with my house destroyed.”

He was thankful that his cane was not burned in the process because it would have been very disastrous .

Mr Prasad said the value of the property sits at $28,000, which also includes his station wagon car.

National Fire Authority chief executive officer John O’ Connor urged members of the public to take extra precaution during this dry spell.

“People should make sure that they do not burn rubbish during this dry spell and always double check that all electrical appliances are switched off before leaving,” Mr O’Connor said.

Investigations continue.
