Grandmother Accused Gets Bail

A 50-year-old woman who is charged with assaulting her 85-year-old mother-in-law was granted bail yesterday.

The accused, Ronita Reddy, was charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm after a video, which went viral on social media, allegedly showing Reddy beating Sheema Challam Reddy at their residence in Nasau, Nadi. The video was filmed by the victim’s grandson.

Reddy appeared in court with her lawyer, Salote Veitokiyaki, to appeal for bail. Bail was granted by Nadi Magistrate Siromi Turaga.

The court heard the accused also had a previous domestic violence restraining order (DVRO) involving another family. Magistrate Turaga ordered the accused pay the bail sum of $200 and to abide by an interim DVRO for the protection of the victim.

In the meantime, Reddy will be relocated to Saweni in Lautoka until the matter is heard again.

The video, showed Sheema Challam Reddy being beaten and then getting up and crying her way towards her grandson who was filming.

The case will be called again on September 3 at the Nadi Magistrates Court.
