FEO Calls Hotel Union Election, Null And Void

The Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem last night declared the National Union of Hospitality, Catering and Tourism Industries Employees elections, null and void.

This was after the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) investigated a complaint from Mana Island Resort workers, that they were not allowed to vote.

Mr Saneem confirmed this at a press conference, at the count centre, at the Hexagon Hotel, Nadi.

The union’s election ended yesterday and counting started after 7pm last night.

A union delegate, Luke Tavuyawa, said Vomo Island Resort workers have raised concerns that they could not vote because their names were not on the voting register although they have been paying membership fees.

Mr Tavuyawa said they were disappointed when they were told they could not vote.

He said they have been vocal against the union and wanted to know what they have been doing for the past three years.

This, he said was because they have had cases reported to the union to fight for, however they were unhappy with the progress of how things were handled.

Meanwhile, the union’s general secretary Daniel Urai said only members were allowed to vote.

He also said that if these workers had some concerns on how the election was carried then all their grievances were to be referred to the Fijian Elections Office because they were conducting the poll.
