The 15 member countries of the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) will be having a series of forums at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi from today.

These include the 30th Executive Committee; 7th Regional Policy Dialogue and 20th Governing Council meetings.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu will join the forum with the objective to discuss ways and get the latest development status in rural development for CIRDAP member countries.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Setareki Tale said this was an opportunity for Fiji to showcase its rural development successes.

“We have seen significant improvement in infrastructure and transformed the communications network in rural areas and quite a number of rural people have benefited from rural development programmes,” Mr Tale said.

“So this is an opportunity to showcase Fiji’s progress and success stories in terms of rural development. Additionally, the meeting also strengthens Fiji’s relationship with CIRDAP member countries.”

He said the 30th Executive Committee meeting, would be officially opened by Mr Seruiratu, and it would run for two days, from August 17 to 18.

The Governing Council’s one-day meeting scheduled for August 20 will be opened by the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

He added that this year’s meeting will look at rural income and poverty alleviation between CIRDAP member countries.

The forum ends on August 21.
