President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau yesterday expressed delight that Fiji hosted the Centre for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific 20th Governing Council Meeting.

Held at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, Ratu Epeli explained the importance of Fiji’s participation in CIRDAP.

The President described the event as timely with Fiji becoming the lone Pacific member country in 2010.

“Fiji is proud to be a lone member of the organisation from the Pacific region, Fiji’s membership in CIRDAP demonstrates the importance that we attach to integrated rural development as a catalyst for income-generation and poverty-reduction within our rural societies.”

This is the first time such an event has been hosted in Fiji following the five-year long membership.

“These meetings on the policy bodies of CIRDAP bear importance and provide guidance to member countries to address poverty to improve livelihoods within rural communities,” Ratu Epeli said.

“On the global front, indications show that economic growth as a poverty reduction strategy has worked well. The Asia and the Pacific region are known for the rapid growth of its economy, but despite that many countries in the region are still beset with rural poverty.

He told the delegates this should be a cause for concern for them as key drivers of rural development in the region. He proposed that the solution be sought in growth and sustainable development.

“It is without doubt that the rural areas due to their nature and isolation should be the focus of national intervention programmes in food security, education, health, housing and clean drinking water amongst other things.”

A traditional iTaukei ceremony was performed prior to the initiation of the event.

Following the formalities special awards were given to the governing council members for their recognition in the work they have delivered by far.
