Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa and Opposition Whip, Ratu Isoa Tikoca yesterday failed to turn up during Parliament’s Business Committee meeting.

The meeting came ahead of next week’s sitting of Parliament.

Secretary-General to Parliament, Viniana Namosimalua said:

“Yes, none of the Social Democratic Liberal Party members (SODELPA) were present today but the National Federation Party Leader, Biman Prasad related their apologies to the Committee.”

Opposition member, Jiosefa Dulakiverata appeared after the meeting.

Mr Dulakiverata said that Opposition member Salote Radrodro informed him of the meeting.

“Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa was the chief guest for the Catholic Women’s League rally in Naililili, Rewa, and this is why she could not attend the meeting,” he said.

The absence of SODELPA representation underscores  the internal turmoil the party is grappling with over a controversial confidential report. Ro Teimumu had known for sometime about the Naililili event and two MPs could have been assigned well before yesterday’s meeting. It is understood that frantic calls to MPs were made yesterday morning by the Opposition Office to try to get two MPs to attend.

The Business Committee is one of Parliament’s four select committees and is the principal decision-maker for the substantive content of the Order Paper.

Speaker to Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni chairs this committee.

Members present in the meeting yesterday:-

  • Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
  • Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations- Jioji Konrote who stood in for Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama who is in India
  • Leader of Government Business – Inia Seruiratu
  • National Federation Party Leader(NFP)-Biman Prasad
  • NFP President-Tupou Draunidalo
