The iTaukei Lands Trust Board (TLTB) has achieved a 56 per cent reduction in rent arrears in the first-half of the year.

And some 3000 tenants have been taken to court by TLTB over land rent arrears.

General manager Tevita Kuruvakadua said the rent arrears for this year were a little over $1 million but the figure had now dropped to $466,000. Mr Kuruvakadua said this was a 56 per cent  reduction and was a reflection of improved strategies put in place for rent collection and reduction of arrears through the strengthening of monitoring system both in terms of IT enhancement and human resource capabilities.

“The cumulative arrears (rent arrears that have accumulated for more than a year) were at $20.7 million in January but have now reduced to $15.8 million as a result of our rent reduction efforts this year.

“TLTB is serious about collecting these arrears for the iTaukei landowners and this is why we have undertaken various public awareness exercises including newspaper advertisement, TV ads, public consultations and our participation at Government-sanctioned roadshows.

“At present, we are taking over 3000 tenants to court who owe the landowners around $6 million in rent arrears.”

Mr Kuruvakadua said this number would increase if tenants were not forthcoming.

“Taking tenants to court appears to be effective but the process is time-consuming and too costly for TLTB,” he said.

TLTB is also offering 100 per cent waiver on interest only subject to full payment of rent arrears but part payment can also be arranged.
