Former Fiji National University vice-chancellor Ganesh Chand yesterday pleaded not guilty to a charge of abuse of office.

Chand had been charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), with one count of abuse of office contrary to section 139 of the Crimes Decree of 2009.

It is alleged that Chand, while being employed as a public officer, had allegedly approved payments for the overseas medical treatment for the then Minister for Education, Filipe Bole, without the approval of the Fiji National University Council.

He appeared before Justice Priyantha Fernando at the High Court in Suva yesterday. After the charges were read out to him in court yesterday Chand pleaded not guilty. The case has been adjourned to November 10 for the submission of the draft agreed facts.
