The Government is committed to ensuring children’s dreams for quality education are achieved as long as they are willing to work hard, says the Minister for Education.

This was the core message Mahendra Reddy made during his visit to the Girl Guides Camp at Cuvu College in the Nadroga Province on Wednesday.

“The whole idea about scouts or girl guides or brownies is to prepare you for independent living,” he said.

“This gets you to think; gets you to question yourselves about how fortunate we are living in the urban areas relative to those living in the rural and maritime areas.”

Mr Reddy said education is often perceived as an avenue to get a qualification and an automatic position in the labour market.

“We in the ministry have changed that dimension; we don’t look at education only in terms of getting a ticket to the labour market, we look holistically about building a better Fiji.”

He said education institutions define the future society of the country and the future state of social and economic affairs in the country.

“On behalf of the Bainimarama Government, we want to assure you Government resources are available to ensure that you go up to the highest level of qualification you would want to,” he said.

“As you all are aware our Government has freed up education so that you can go to primary school, high school or university without having to worry about tuition fees or accommodation. Bus fare has also been taken care of.”

He said this was part of the Government’s ultimate vision to build a knowledge-based society where people critically think outside the box and rising above emotions as well as rising above making decisions based on ethnicity, religion or class.
