Australian-based self-claimed lawyer Mereoni ‘Oni’ Kirwin has been banned from entering Fiji.

Director Fiji Immigration Nemani Vuniwaqa confirmed yesterday that Ms Kirwin was on Fiji’s blacklist.

He said Ms Kirwin’s inclusion in the blacklist was a directive from the Prime Minister’s office as she was considered a threat to national security.

“She is on our blacklist because of her involvement with the late Ratu Osea Gavidi in the so-called Christian state in Nadroga and Ra as their legal adviser,” Mr Vuniwaqa said. Ms Kirwin was involved in attempts to form a so-called Christian State in Ra and Nadroga.

Mr Vuniwaqa said they would be closely monitoring her movements after she was added to the immigration’s controversial list.

Mr Vuniwaqa said that at this stage the Immigration Department was still investigating her as a foreigner.

“She has been travelling on an Australian passport.”

Meanwhile Commissioner of Police Ben Groenewald also confirmed in Labasa yesterday that Ms Kirwin had been blacklisted.

He said there was a possibility she could be extradited from Australia to Fiji to face charges.

Ms Kirwin, a Matuku-born Australian citizen, has openly promoted the formation of the so-called Christian states in Ra, Nadroga and Navosa.

She had also claimed that she was making a presentation to the International Court of Justice in the Hague that Fiji should have been returned to the descendants of the chiefs who ceded Fiji to Great Britain in Levuka on October 10, 1874, instead of the state.

There is no evidence that she has done it.
