A 35-year-old Labasa taxi driver is admitted at Labasa Hospital after he was knifed and robbed by three youths on Monday Night.

Labasa Taxi Union chairman Mahen Prasad said Satendra Sami of Wailevu, Labasa was in a critical condition.

“Mr Sami, a Labasa market stand-based taxi driver was transporting three youths from his stand to Vunivau after 10pm,” Mr Prasad said.

“When he reached at Vunivau Temple road, he stopped and one youth got out while the second youth held his head and neck from behind,” he explained.

“The youth that got off punched him on the face and the youth sitting in front also punched his face,” Mr Prasad said.

“Then they pushed him out of the taxi, using a small hand carrying knife, knifed his back and side,” he said.

“They took his wallet, mobile phone and cash and ran away, leaving him lying down on the road side,” Mr Prasad said.

He said, somehow, Mr Sami managed to walk to a nearby house whose occupants took him to hospital.

“I went to see him at the hospital and found out that he cannot talk,” Mr Prasad said.

He said his face was badly wounded and swollen and was in great pain.

“This is not the first time a taxi driver has been robbed in Labasa in the night,” Mr Prasad said.

“I have written letters so many times to Police headquarters in Labasa to carry out police patrols in the night but our request has fallen into deaf ears,” he added.

Police Spokesperson Inspector Autnaisa Sokomuri confirmed receiving the report and was carrying out investigation.
