Family Mourns After Cooking Accident

A family of Solovi in Nadi is mourning the loss of their mother who died after sustaining burns in a cooking accident.

The late Hem Lata, 57, passed away at the burns unit at the Lautoka Hospital on Saturday. A post-mortem determined she suffered from 85 per cent burns.

A family member said, “We are mourning at the moment, what has happened has happened, we cannot reverse time.”

It is alleged that the late Mrs Lata was cooking dhal inside her kitchen with the use of firewood when the accident happened.

Her 60-year old husband and 35-year old son sustained burns while trying to rescue her. In the process, both suffered 20 per cent burns each. They are recovering at the hospital.

Police spokesman inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the trio were rushed to Nadi hospital before being transferred to the burns unit in Lautoka Hospital.

He said the incident took place on Friday but the matter was reported to Police on Monday.

Inspector Sokomuri said investigations into the matter continue. He urged the public to be vigilant while cooking.
