The Fiji Alliance for Mental Health (FAMH) needs our wholehearted support, says the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

He made the comment while officiating during the Women of the West (WOW) Business Network Group Fundraising Gala Dinner with FAMH at the Sheraton Fiji Resort last Saturday night.

“The main shift is the maintaining of the mental illness education rather than only on treatment” Ratu Epeli said.

“More work remains to be done with limited resources and no core funding. FAMH will continue to seek your financial support. There is still a great need to further educate the public and reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with mental issues so that they can seek help.”

Ratu Epeli commended WOW for organising the event which was attended by more than 300 people.

New Zealand All Black legend Sir John Kirwan was the the guest speaker.

“Depression is an illness and not a weakness,” Sir John said.

“Depress is an illness and is not a curse and suicide is not an option.

“I was an All Black and had everything. One day I woke up, I got depression and it took me five years to get help.

“When I was in depression I have to get the little things right and need to come up with a plan. You won’t enjoy anything. I encourage people to seek help.”

“We need control, we need to reach out to our people.”

WOW president Mitimiti Dreunamisimisi said more than $48,600 was raised from the dinner with $38,600 collected from a live auction while $10,000 was from raffle sale.

“The event was a huge success, not only to raise money but the fact that people left the ballroom more learned with a new message on the stigma of mental illness,” Adi Mitimiti said.
