It was a proud and emotional moment yesterday for Ram Pati – Nausori Market’s oldest vendor.

She won the praise of Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during the opening of the new Nausori Municipal Market yesterday.

She is 91. She is the oldest vendor who had been selling vegetables, fruits and rootcrops in the old market for more than 70 years.

She was among those who joined the PM and Nausori Town Council in opening the new market and the new Nausori Bus Stand.

“Today is very special to me because it brought back memories of my early days at the market with my family.

“I started selling at the market when I was 18 years old. During those days we used to sell at a particular spot near the old market and there were bushes all around,” Ms Pati said.

“I am very, very happy with the opening of our new market today. We will be able to have a proper shelter and will not face anymore difficulty.”

She said she would continue selling produce at the new market.

While opening the new market and bus stand, Mr Bainimarama paid tribute to Ms Pati.

He said she had been faithfully serving the people of Nausori and surrounding areas ever since she started selling as a market vendor.

“Nausori salutes you,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“The whole of Fiji salutes you. We thank you for your service and hope you enjoy many more years of happiness and good health.”

More than 2000 people from the provinces of Rewa, Tailevu and Naitasiri were part of the opening ceremony at Vunivivi in Nausori yesterday afternoon.
