The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) peacekeepers who served for a year at Golan Heights were awarded General Service Medals during a parade in Nabua yesterday.

The awarding of medals coincided with Father’s Day celebrations today by some churches.

They were greeted by RFMF Deputy Commander Brigadier-General Mohammed Aziz, Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho and other senior RFMF officers.

The parade was followed by a church service at the Tuvusa Hall at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua.

The group also included the 45 soldiers who were detained for two weeks by the al-Nusra Front militants in Syria last year.

The troops were serving with the United Nations Disengagement Force amidst escalating clashes between the Syrian government and anti-government forces.

Brigadier-General Aziz acknowledged the soldiers for their hard work.

“We have experienced through you a very challenging 12 months since part of this contingent were detained. But through the prayers and good wishes of the people of Fiji, the Government of Fiji and the commitment of the international community, we are pleased to have you back all here,” Brigadier-General Aziz said.

He also referred to the Sinai situation – that despite the heightened activity in the area, the RFMF remained committed.

The Deputy Commander also acknowledged the work done by their late comrade, Staff Sergeant Peniele Racolo, who died during a fitness test at Camp Ziouani in June this year.
