ANALYSIS: Time’s Up For Beddoes

Mick Beddoes may have been dreaming when he questioned the integrity of SODELPA’s annual general meeting in Suva last Thursday.

He dug his own grave, politically that is.

When he questions the processes that were used to pass sweeping changes to the party’s constitution, he sounds similar to his rants after SODELPA lost last year’s general election. Despite the Multinational Observer Group which independently monitored the election ruling that it was fair and credible, he refused to accept the outcome claiming the system was rigged.

He kept harping about it. He also criticised the Constitution. Yet the 15 SODELPA MP’s including Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa, decided to go into Parliament.

His latest outburst on his Facebook page is sour grapes. He thinks he is larger than the party. Well, the people have spoken and this time he has been proved wrong again. Mr Beddoes needs to swallow his pride and allow the reformers to accomplish the work they have started to prepare the party for 2018.

The work is much more than putting out press releases, writing speeches for Ro Teimumu, and spinning propaganda on social media. It is about going down to the ordinary people, many of whom have little or no contact with Internet, hearing their concerns and attempting to address them. It is at the heart of the changes now approved, and it reflects a party that wants to be responsive to the people’s needs.

Mr Beddoes wanted to delay the changes but SODELPA president Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu would not allow him.

In this respect Mr Beddoes is a liability to the party. He lost big time in the last election. He has little electoral credibility.
