The 12 Fijian seasonal workers returning from New Zealand have thanked the Government for giving them the exposure and also enabling them to earn a living abroad.

The inaugural group returned last Saturday after spending seven months in New Zealand.

The group were part of the workers sent under the NZ Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Work Scheme through the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations and were employed by Pick Hawkes Bay Incorporated in February this year.

Waqa Salabogi, 40, from Namara village, Waya Lailai in the Yasawa group was among the group.

“We all thank the Government for giving us this chance to learn and earn at the same time,” he said.

“It was an awesome programme; we learned a lot and we made sure that we made it right for the future Fijian workers that would qualify for the scheme; I hope I could be chosen again.”

Wife Lusiana Salabogi, 38, with her two children was happy to see their dad back in the country.

“It is has been months and we only chat via Facebook but I’m happy to see him come back in one piece,” she said.

“Even when he was away the Ministry of Labour officer would visit us from time to time supplying us with the needed supplies to keep our family life running.”

Fiji’s participation in this scheme was through a pilot programme, where a total of 31 workers were sent for employment to NZ.
