The use and abuse of drugs are increasing in Fiji, says Seaqaqa Police Station’s Corporal Jona Semo.

He told parents of Seaqaqa Primary School gathered during the World First Aid Day celebrations in Seaqaqa last Saturday that parental guidance was important.

“Parents are the first doctors, nurses, Police officers and teachers to their children,” Corporal Semo said. He said the negligence of parents in the past has led to many lives being lost.

“The cost of use and abuse of drugs to the society and Government has been immense and immeasurable.”

He said their mission was to implement the anti-drug laws and to exercise operational supervision of drug enforcement unit in the national anti drug campaign.

Corporal Semo told students that most of the communities in Fiji were not aware of the use and effects of drugs.

“Glue sniffing is very common among students as it is very easy to buy.”

He said students sniffed glue to escape school pressure, get enjoyment or were being forced by their peer groups.

“Parents, if you see your children coming home with cans of glue, you question them and if possible report it to the Police, we will surely assist,” he said.

“Drugs open us up to all kinds of sin, spiritual and physical.”

Corporal Semo told the students and parents that Police were always willing to assist but they should take the first initiative.
