Mick Beddoes faces disciplinary action for his public outburst against SODELPA’s special general meeting last Thursday and its officials.

The party has registered two official complaints against him from members.

They allow the party to activate the disciplinary mechanisms.

Mr Beddoes’ statement, they said, had questioned the authority of party president Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and other officials, the integrity of the meeting and its processes and brought the party into disrepute.

Mr Beddoes,  the principal administrative officer in the Opposition Office, claimed on his Facebook page that it had been agreed ahead of the special general meeting (SGM) that only the amendments to the constitution would be concluded.

“Elections of office bearers would be done at the proposed October meeting.”

But, he claimed there was an “ambush”. He accused general-secretary Pio Tabaiwalu and Adi Litia Qionibaravi (lawyer, adviser and architect of amended constitution) of proceeding with the election of people to new positions.

He said he had proposed that the amended constitution be circulated “to give our members time to read and digest the changes then decide who they wanted as office bearers, because many of our constituencies were not represented.”

Mr Beddoes said: “The President knocked that suggestion of mine out the window and allowed the election of officials to proceed.

“But in the end their ambush ran out of steam because they failed to elect 70 per cent of the positions as the districts were not represented due to the deferment of the meeting so that they had to fall back to what Laufitu (fellow Opposition Office member and Ro Teimumu supporter Laufitu Malani) and I were saying anyway.”

Mr Beddoes claimed many delegates could not attend the meeting because it was shifted from Saturday to Thursday. He said Mr Tabaiwalu forgot to arrange a permit.

Mr Tabaiwalu and Mr Beddoes did not respond to questions sent to them yesterday. It is understood that Mr Tabaiwalu received several calls from members expressing their disgust over Mr Beddoes’ outburst.Ratu Naiqama could not be reached to comment. But many emails were exchanged between members expressing concern over the way the internal divisions in the party were portrayed publicly. But no action could be taken unless an official complaint was lodged. This was done yesterday.  When all the processes are in place and proceedings begin, it will be the second inquiry that Mr Beddoes has to front.

He is also part of an inquiry looking into a confidential report critical of him and his role in the Opposition Office and Ro Teimumu’s  leadership.

The report has split the party. Mr Beddoes’ latest rant has made it worse. Party insiders say if disciplinary procedures are not followed it will show that the party is weak and lacks credibility.
