Safety at the Labasa Bus Stand was questioned by Labasa stakeholders during the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) projects stakeholders meeting at Labasa Civic Centre yesterday.

The issue was brought up after the first accident at Labasa Bus Stand late last month that claimed the life of Year 13 student, Vivek Narayan.

FRA capital works manager Ian Hunter said the main issue was about safety at the bus stand.

“Obviously it is handling far more buses than it was designed to handle and it is not doing particularly well in terms of safety,” Mr Hunter said.

He said the aerial video taken by the FRA was to help them understand the situation happening on the ground within the bus stand area.

“There is a danger with buses reversing and pedestrians walking all over; this should not be happening at the bus station.

“We will be talking one on one with all stakeholders on this issue starting with the bus operators and there will be more intensive consultations after this.”

Mr Hunter said the general session was to familiarise people with the ongoing projects.
