A 34-year-old Australian citizen was sentenced by High Court in Lautoka to 15 years imprisonment yesterday.

Ethan Kai was charged and found guilty of one count of   unlawful importation of illicit drugs contrary to section 5(b) of the illicit drugs control act of 2004 was sentenced by Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.

The accused was charged with smuggling $30 million worth of heroin from Thailand  to Fiji that was packed into smaller packets and stuffed inside the tyres of quad bikes in December last year.

The court heard that the accused had engaged in importing 29.9 kilogrammes of heroin.

A co-accused Mohammed Shaheed Khan was acquitted of all charges relating to the case by Justice Thushara Rajasinghe in Lautoka last Thursday.

Justice Rajasinghe said it was the judicial responsibility to sentence offenders of this nature to demonstrate that the importation of such illicit drugs was unwelcome and unwanted.

In mitigation, the court heard that the accused was a  property developer and the  sole breadwinner of his family  that included a 15-year-old son who had sustained an injury in 2009, his one-and-a-half  old daughter  and elderly mother.

The accused will not be eligible for parole for a period of 14 years pursuant to section 18(1) of the Sentencing and Penalties Decree of 2009.

The accused has 30 days to appeal at the Fiji Court of Appeal.
