Michelle Shankar, 21, believes that building a knowledge-based society is important for Fiji.

This, she said, would be the gist of her speeches during the Telecom Fiji Sugar Festival 2015.

Miss Shankar, a Queen contestant, is sponsored by Formscaff and will also speak on the effects of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

She said she would target young people because of the unhealthy eating habits they had been exposed to these days.

“I entered the Sugar Festival to work on my confidence, make friends and reach out to the less fortunate,” Miss Shankar said.

“My main topic will be based on the rise of NCD cases, how they are affecting the general public and their preventative measures.”

She is a student of the Fiji National University pursuing   Bachelor in Secondary Education degree at the Lautoka Campus.

She was a former student of Bainivalu Primary school at Nakasi, Nasinu, (Year 1-5), Lautoka Central Primary School (Year 6 – 8) and Tilak High School.

Miss Shankar is the eldest child in her family.

Her hobbies are socialising, listening to music and watching soccer.

“My role model is my mum because she is always motivating me to work hard.

“My message to other youths out there in light of the recent suicide cases is to treasure their life and stay safe,” she said.

Festival senior vice-president and programme director Pushp Raj said, “We expect good participation from people, vendors and we will have multicultural programmes throughout the week.

“This is the best time for people to come and enjoy themselves and the best part is Miss TFL Sugar Festival 2015 and Miss Charity will have the choice of flying via Fiji Airways to either Auckland or Sydney, according to their choice.”

The festival is sponsored by Telecom Fiji Limited, Fiji Airways, Goodman Fielder and Shop N Save Supermarket.
