More support from the Government of Fiji to reduce fishing operation cost has been suggested as a way forward for our fishing industry.

The suggestion was put forward by the managing director of Gold Ocean Fiji Limited, Xue Jun Du yesterday during the Pacific Tuna Forum held in Nadi.

Another proposal put forward by him was the need to protect Southern Albacore to avoid overfishing and encourage value added fish processing to maximise the recourse return.

Mr Du said there was also a need to improve infrastructure especially the fishing wharf and slipway.

“Fishing school needs to provide skilled crew, qualified captains and engineers,” he said.

Weak currency

Fiji’s traditional markets for tuna products continue to be Japan and the United States.

But Mr Du said weakened Japanese Yen had impacted net returns to ship owners.

He said the returns had decreased by more than 50 per cent compared to 2012 price.
