Some chiefs of Kadavu have called on authorities to increase the imprisonment terms for people convicted of marijuana cultivation.

The Tui Nabukelevu, Ratu Apakuki Nanovo, said this was needed because most people always had negative a perception about Kadavu.

He said it was because of the numerous drug raids the Fiji Police had done on the island and where they had successfully uprooted marijuana plants.

Ratu Apakuki made this comment following a presentation by the Police Drug Unit during the Kadavu Provincial Council meeting in Suva yesterday.

The maximum penalty for those found unlawfully cultivating illicit drugs is life imprisonment or $1,000,000 fine or both.

Police work

According to the Fiji Police Force’s Crime Prevention and Community Policing co-ordinator, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anare Masitabua, they have identified 96 marijuana cultivators from the island to date.

“The reason I want the sentence increased is that we are worried about the lives of the people back in the island, especially the children and women in the villages,” he said.

“This cultivation is being done by youths in the village and if it continues there will come a point where young children will know it.

“What we can see now is that it is very hard to stop it, but when they will increase the number of years I’m confident this will help in stopping committing this crime.”

While responding to Ratu Nanovo, the DPC southern, Senior Superintendent of Police Biu Matavou, said this proposal was something that would have to be presented to Cabinet because they were the law- making body.
