Four hundred and thirty-nine sugarcane farmers of Waiqele sector outside Labasa Town received weedicide voucher from Labasa Cane Producers Association (LCPA) yesterday.

“There are 10 sectors in Vanua Levu; seven in Labasa and three in Seaqaqa,” Mr Raj said.

He said they had given weedicide voucher to all sectors. Only Wailevu sector was left. They would be given this on Monday.

Emmenual Jit, one of the most successful sugarcane farmers in Waiqele, said for 2014 he supplied 1800 tonnes of sugarcane to the Labasa mill.

“The LCPA issued the weedicide voucher according to the total tonnes of cane supplied by the farmers to the mill they,” he said.

“Therefore, for 1800 tonnes of cane, I received $686 weedicide voucher. We are very grateful to LCPA for providing us this assistance since 2011.”

He said such kind of assistance has enabled them to do farming better.

Labasa Cane Producers Association executive manager Ravneel Raj said for every 100 tonnes of cane, the farmers were given $42 of weedicide voucher.

Other incentive

Meanwhile, Mr Raj said the association had been giving the death benefit benefit to farmers.

“If a sugarcane farmer dies, we give $500 either to the wife or his parents or to his children to assist them in the funeral arrangement,” Mr Raj said.

He said this was LCPA’s policy.

“We also gave away pre-sugarcane harvest assistance to farmers such as the sugarcane knife and file before the sugarcane crushing season began,” Mr Raj said.

He said LCPA has been assisting farmers in many ways and he hoped farmers continue to work diligently.
