FNU Teams Present Innovative Ideas At Quality Circle Convention

Eight teams from the Fiji National University yesterday presented their innovative and creative ideas which could be used to improve organisational performance.

The teams participated at the FNU’s Internal Quality Circle Competition yesterday.

FNU Acting Vice Chancellor, Ian Rouse, said the competition could be an advantage as new and innovative ideas presented may also be adopted by FNU to further improve quality within departments.

“Done right, these results can help improve the overall competitiveness of the organisation by reducing costs, improving quality and promoting innovation,” he said.

“Quality circles are one of the important mechanisms for continues improvement in all aspects of an organisation.

“A quality circle enlists the help of employees in solving problems related to their own jobs.”

FNU’s National Training and Productivity Centre Acting Director, Peni Taoi, said the concept of the competition brings self-development and mutual development among the grassroots level employees.

He said Quality Control Circles play a tremendous role in benchmarking the success and excellence of Fijian organisations.

Mr Taoi said the Quality Control Circles improveed their capability to reach self-actualisation and makes the workplace better.

“NTPC has been actively promoting and developing the strength of Quality Control Circles in Fiji for the past nine years and the feedback from the stakeholders has been overwhelming,” he said.

“Quality Control Circles builds an attitude of problem prevention, promote cost reduction, and develop harmonious manager, supervisor and worker relationship, improve productivity and Increase employee motivation.”

Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Vilimone Baledrokadroka said: “Innovation and creativity have now become drivers towards a sustainable wealthy economy.

“It is our commitment to imbed these into our corporate culture. As a succeeding team, we not drive quality but live quality.”



The FNU Internal Convention on Quality awarded participants with gold, silver and bronze awards as well as Leader of the year and Facilitator of the year awards.

The winner will take part as a non-competitive team in the National Convention in Quality which will be held on October 8.


QCC List of winners

  • Gold: Expeditors – Nasinu
  • Silver: Sub Havana – Nadi
  • Bronze: AFC – Samabula
  • Best leader of the year: Sandhya Deo Kumar-Nasinu
  • Best Team facilitator of the year: Mataias Tabasi- Nadi
