The Fijian Government will continue to support the safeguarding of Fijian culture.

Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts acting Permanent Secretary Kelera Taloga says the performing of arts, visual arts, artefacts, culture, agricultural and fishing practices, social structure, cuisine, music, fashion, social governance, birth and death rituals rites of passages and ceremonies are all intangible cultural heritage in the Fijian landscape which is understood as culture in its entirety.

Ms Taloga said this while opening the Convention for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage yesterday at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva.

“The convention will provide chances for stakeholders to comment and make recommendations to the Department of Heritage and Arts to finalise the draft national framework for the implementation of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage,” Ms Taloga said.

She said the Fijian society with its differing cultures, people, norms and traditions are best characterised through the concept of intangible cultural heritage.

Ms Taloga added the convention strove to co-operate with countries around the world in the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and there are 163 countries including nine from the Pacific that have ratified it.

The concept of intangible cultural heritage was recognised as an international instrument in 2003 by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation) a specialised agency of the UN that promotes peace and international education through science and culture.

“We will be able to assist communities, practitioners, government bodies and other stakeholders at the national level to understand and implement the convention,” she said.
