Speaker to Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni achieved another milestone this week after she was named as the Ambassador to Champion Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The announcement was made on Thursday night at an event organised by the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) as part of the Beyond 2015 and Action/2015 Campaign.

FCOSS executive director Neil Maharaj said the appointment of Dr Luveni as the first woman Speaker was an example of how inequality was addressed in regards to gender issues.

“Her experience with the UN system equips her well with MDG and SDG. She will be able to guide, strategise and lead the historic goals in Fiji,” Mr Maharaj said.

“Her experience in government in the past in bringing reforms and policy changes, including National Policy on Ageing and increasing of social pension,” Mr Maharaj said.

FCOSS hopes that being an ambassador to champion SDGs in Parliament, Dr Luveni will ensure that awareness on SDGs will reach national and community level through the policy makers and parliamentarians.

Dr Luveni will also play a lead role in SDG meetings, consultations and campaigns organised by FCOSS.
