Four men convicted for the rape of a mother in 2012 were given custodial sentences by the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Manoa Nairogorogo, Josefa Rauto, Kameli Sauduadua and Abarama Siri were convicted for five counts for raping the 29- year-old mother of three on December 15, 2012 at the Navua Club.

The first-accused was sentenced to 11 years with a non-parole period of eight years; the second sentenced to nine years with a minimum of seven years to be served, the third-accused was given 10 years (count three and four) with a minimum of eight years and the fourth-accused handed eight years with a non-parole period of six years.

The incident happened when the four were drinking at the Navua Club where the woman was also drinking with her friends in another group.

The bar closed around 1am and drinking continued downstairs where Nairogorogo asked the woman for sex which she refused. He then punched her on the face and forced her on the ground and raped her.

The first-accused’s three companions then took turns to rape the woman.

A bystander called the Police and three of them were arrested at the scene while the fourth was arrested at his home the next morning.

All four admitted to the offence in their caution interview.

Justice Paul Madigan in sentencing said that there was a perception that if a female was drinking with males and imbibed as much as they did, that she must make herself ‘available’ for subsequent sexual service.

“Sadly that is not the case,” Justice Madigan said.

“A woman is entitled to drink in a club and is entitled to the respect that any drinking young man would extend to any male companion and to regard a female drinking companion as a ‘fair game’ will receive no recognition from the courts.”
